WebVisions: The Past, Present, and Future of Web Typography

Author: Mike

Presenter: Mark Wyner
Session Notes and References: Found Here.

I thought this was an interesting talk while attending the WebVisions conference, about where we’ve been with typography on the web, where we are, and where we’re going. Mark started off this session with a refresher of how far we’ve come with typography on the web. He started by reminiscing the restrictions of the dreadful early days where type was wrapped in a font tag.

Great day of sessions today at WebVisions. I particularly enjoyed the opening keynote by Luke Williams of Frog Design. The topic of his presentation was Thinking the Unthinkable: How To Spark Disruptive Innovation.

The key takeaway here: stop replicating and start innovating. By breaking traditional patterns, you can create an expectation gap, limit your competition, and leave others scrambling to catch up.

New idenities for political campaigns

Author: quiller

John McCain has recently unveiled a new identity for his campaign for the Arizona State Senate, complete with a subtle gradient on the stylized flag that serves as the campaign’s logo. After Obama’s ‘08 Presidential campaign single-handedly re-wrote the book on visual identity for political campaigns, it’s not entirely surprising to see such a visual shift from other high-profile politicians like McCain.

What would you do with your millions?

The Minnesota State Lottery has a microsite allowing daily entries for a chance at millions. It is a fun spin on the simple task of a daily entry. Everyday provides a simple question… what would you do with your millions? The concept breaks down to a simple concept. Ask your audience a fun poll question, see how they compare with everyone else and enter that day. The icing on the cake is the little psychological profile at the bottom of the page that defines you based on your answer.

There is one down side to the execution. While I like the animations, the entire site should not have been done in Flash. Much of what was executed could have been that would have made the site more accessible.

All in all though, simple and fun.
