Wow, that little App Store side project Apple has going on sure doesn’t seem to be settling down. After launching in July of ‘08 and hitting 100 million downloads in September, the App Store has just crossed the 500 million download mark; a mere six months after opening. Compare that to the iTunes Music Store, which took two whole years to cross the 500 million mark. Although to be fair, we have little idea of the paid to free ratio of app downloads. There are over 15,000 apps in the App Store currently, and many of them are free, but we have to hand it to Apple for the unprecedented success in the mobile download space!

Not only do these videos have an interesting story line but you get to choose what happens next. Very clever how it uses all the functions of the phone in these series of videos. Thanks to Stephanie Jarrett for sharing.

Next wave of mobile banking?
One of my friends has an issue with cell phones. Somehow, they seem to end up in the toilet. This has happened on more than one occasion; don’t ask me why; that’s not a place I want to go. If she saw the phone more as cash, as a method of payment, would she be less likely to virtually flush it down the commode? Mobile users in Mexico are now able to link savings accounts to their phones, so payments can be made to restaurants or taxis, for example, via text message. We all know that the U.S. is significantly behind South Korea and Japan in mobile phone tech, but I didn’t realize Mexico was also kicking our behinds. I embrace any opportunity to carry less stuff around–it’s getting hard to fit it all into a cute little clutch. And my friend? Maybe she’ll just carry a spare.
